Default Tips on the best sports car for the money

Hey,
I'm looking for

-Sporty
-Preffer convertible
-2-4 seats but 4 preffered
-Reliable for looooong drives (plan on going cross country in a few months, about 2000 or so miles, plus 2000 back)
-Cost under $45k US

I know its a hard decision and im basically looking for the perfect car (sporty, reliable, roomy and not so expensive) but these are the choices I came up with based on a speed research i did a few minutes ago:

-03-05 M3 convertible
-03-04 M5
-06 M
-06 G35
-03 SL500 (i love this one)
-03 CL500
-03 CL55 (a little over $45k, not sure if its worth it)
-05 C55
-New S2000
-New 350Z (I work at a Nissan dealership so I can get a bit of a discount)

(search based on autotrader.com)

Please help anyone, I don't know much about car reliability and have heard man things about all of these so i don't know what to base my decision on. BMWs tend to have problems early on, Mercs are too expensive based on competitors, 350z too cramped and a bit of a rough ride, and so on.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Thanks a bunch

ANY car can be reliable as long as you take care of it. If you don't abuse it day in and day out, you'll be fine with any car you get.

If you're looking for sport AND room, then a Lancer EVO or a WRX STi are good options, as they are four door and all-out sports cars.

Next to that I'd go with a G35 or M3. That's sport meeting class.

After than I'd go for a 350Z or an S2000, especially because you would be getting NEW cars. Can't beat that. Get a NEW car and take care of it, and it will be as reliable as you want.

I would prefer new cars so that would mean the Nissans, but the BMWs and Benzes you listed are only a few years old so they're pretty much new, I'd say M5 is my top pick out of that lot, by 03-04 I assume you mean the E39? If so those are a great reliable car and damn fast.

Evo, 350Z and WRX STI do not have people friendly suspension. They are pretty rough riding cars from the factory. If you do end up getting an Evo don't even bother looking at the base model. They don't even come with stereos. They are great sports cars but definitely not for someone looking for luxury and speed. Given your wants that you have outlined I would go with the AWD G35 sedan. Fast, has plenty of room, and the stability and handling that comes with AWD. Their suspension is also softened versus the 350Z.

another choice you have is a Audi S4. they are sort of like the european version of the AWD G35 Malaziel mentioned, except they got a bigger engine. but unlike the G35, there's a convertible version of S4. if you're willing to spent more, you may want to consider the RS4, which is a even sportier version of the S4 with the same class & refinement; not to mention it uses the same engine that is going to be in the R8 super car

The RS4 is a monster. Really fast nice car but unfortunately prohibitively expensive at over $60,000. The S4 is also a good suggestion though some people find there looks to be sort of plain. They are however some of the best cars in the luxury-sport class.

yeah, i just double checked the price on the RS4, which comes with a $60k+ base price...
regarding the looks, that's why i like them. they are like sleeper cars - plain looking on the outside, a monster on the inside, aka wolf in sheep clothing

personally though, i'll probably just get a used S4 and mod it. after the 02 or 03 model year, the S4 changed its engine from turbo V6 to V8; not much change after that except for some cosmetic ones and tweak to the drivetrain. so say i spent $35-40k on a used V8 S4 and put $5-10k on mods. i believe it is possible to get it close if not match the performance of a RS4; though all this is only speculation

Actually the 350Z has a fairly soft stock suspension. Its the EVO,STI, And BMW M that have very tight sport suspensions... But thats a very good point about the base evo's, they are made to be true track cars... so they have the bare minimum in them. For a long trip car, none of those 3 would be very comfy for long trips... you feel EVERY pebble in the road.

From what it sounds like you want... i would shoot for the Convertable 350Z,CL500, S4, EVO (if you dont mind a track suspension), G35 coupe, or a Saab 9-3, Saab 9-5, Golf GTI, Jetta GTI.

All are 4 seaters and very sporty, aswell as great cars! If you want some 2 seater suggestions that breaks in to a whole nother realm

I have read a lot of reviews with people complaining that the suspension on the 350Z is to tight. So I figured that would probably put him off. I have never personally ridden in one but I don't think I would even notice since the car I ride in the most is my friends Integra Type R lowered 1.5 inches with tightened suspension.

an acura RSX or a acura integra. As far as handling goes they are the best. they have one the speed vision world cup challenge 10 seasons in a row. but if you want to beat some people in straight lines as well get an M3. they are the best of both worlds. they have muscle and can also corner very well.
