Default Cold air intake

hey sup. My buddy bought himself a rice rocket (94 integra) about a month ago and he said he put a cold air intake on it. Now i know that cold air is more dense than warm air.

So you get more molecules of O2 into the cyclinders per mol of cold air than warm air. Thus giving you more power (Oxygen is usually the limiting reagent)

Now i googled a pic of an cold air intake, but i don't see how it's any different than a stock intake, i thought it would be a snorkle out the hood, can you fill me in? thanks

It's a tube with less restriction then stock due to less and smoother pends with a high flowing air filter and should some how have protection from engine heat either by being shielded from the bay and a port allowing fresh air from inside or by being located out side of the engine compartment. I'll post some pics up thursday when im off of a actual cold air intake and a standard intake aftermarket intake from my cars if your still curious

If it's breathing hot air it isn't giving much of a performance increase, if you route it to some place that has fresh air it becomes more productive, if you then go further and put it somewhere where incoming air in the front can ram itself into the filter then you will get even more performance from it. Thusly the air ram shaker was invented. It performs the same function as a CAI with maybe 1-2 more HP at very high speeds, provided that you have accounted for fluid dynamics and have a hood that channels air toward the ram.

roughly how much horspower would that gain, cause is like 1-2HP that really going to make a difference? i've only driven an 09 Caravan SXT and a (dunno year) chevrolet epica and they both have 150+hp. So wouldn't all the work for modifying your intak be yeild a negligable increase in horspower, you would need something like a super charger or a turbocharger for anything....or so i thought?

Every car comes stock with a cold air intake, but a very restrictive one. If we're talking a strong engine, you can see up to 8ish HP (I think), but that's with a very good filter and good placement. On a car like mine, a 4 banger Toyota, I'd be lucky to see 3 horsepower.

Most people do it for the sound I'd say.

Bigger the engine the more HP gains you will see because you will be allowing the engine to breathe that much more. On my 4.6L V8 for instance I gained about 9hp at the flywheel, 12 when I got it tuned for the CAI.

oh, so if you have a 5.0L V8 lets say (my mom's car) and you put on a CAI, it'll be louder when you gun it?

Not necessarily louder but it will definately have a different tone. My stang went from a soft rumble to a very hard rumble with some slight popping when revving above 2.5k (kinda like a small backfire but not).
