Default Need opinion on Toyotas

Hello everyone,
I am a business reporter currently doing a story about the Toyota crisis and whether people still have any consumer confidence in Toyota.
I am looking to speak to anyone who is in the market for a car about if they would consider buying a Toyota, or anyone who might be buying one in the future.
Please send me an email ASAP at [email protected]. I am on deadline for tomorrow afternoon, so the sooner the better please!

Thanks so much!

The only Toyotas I would consider are 1984-1992 2WD/4WD pickups with a five speed. Anything else made by Toyota is far too boring to drive, far too overcomplicated and far too likely to run away to interest me. Plus, IMO Toyota hasn't made an aesthetically pleasing car in 15 years.

1985 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci OHV inline six | 4-speed OD manual | 310K | No power brakes | Running 100% - It hasn't driven this good in 15 years!

1984 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci six | granny four | 3.55 rear end | 210K | Brakes shot. Rear drums are doing most of the work. Not fit to drive due to that.
1997 Ford Explorer XLT | 4.0L Vulcan V6 | 5-speed automatic | shift-on-the-fly 4WD | 210,000 miles | Running 95% - Needs brakes on all four corners + bald tires
1989 Ford F150 | 300cid six...again | 5-speed | 4x4 | 160K | Needs brakes done as well. Oi!

Regardless of these unintended acceleration problems, I would honestly consider buying a new FT86 if they can keep the price under $18k for a base model. That's about all I wound want out of toyota's lineup.

Honestly, I prefer Volvo over toyota in any category.

BUT:
Toyota has good cars to offer. We need to be assured that something as major as this doesn't happen in the future. Normally, there are recalls for small things, like stuck overdrive switches, and headlights burning out too fast, etc. Toyota needs to reassure their customers. If they do this, they will get right back up on top.

Toyota makes decent cars. Extremely boring to drive, yet reliable. They'll always get you where you want to go and they drive forever.

Also depends a lot on what year you get. The 90's Yota's were made extremely solid. Early 00's were known to have some issues, and the latest models are pretty great regardless of the recalls.

Pretty great...if they don't kill you lol

Speaking of which, this is what I haven't been able to figure out. Not to speak poorly of the dead...but why the heck didn't people just put the car in neutral when it started speeding out of control, instead of calling 911?

Perhaps they tried to and the glitching ECU didn't accept the input? I believe at least some of the runaway cars are shift by wire.

In which case it'd be nice if Toyota would admit it's the ECU like everyone has said all along...

The US Gub'ment has started to threaten criminal actions and other serious stuff, so Toyota is now starting to admit that there might be an ECU problem. They still haven't outright admitted the ECUs don't work and are causing these runaways, but they're starting to sorta sideways say there might be an issue.

Oy, legalese.
