Default Car Mae REbranding in the USA

Why the hell do we do it? Ford has Lincoln and Mercury, Toyota has Lexus, Honda has Acura, and Nissan Has infinity, Plus GM and all of their different brands. Is it because Americans are stupid enough to think that a re-branded car is worth more because of the name, or is there another reason?

It's just different lines giving more options for a consumer to choose from. There are some qualit differences but these days even a fully loaded Camry has a awesome option pack.

With Ford, it's actually a difference in trim levels. Ford is a midrange, Lincoln is the high-end luxury stuff while Mercury is more bargain based.

With GM, and speaking most critically of GMC/Chevy, it's a straight nVidia-style rebrand. GMC = Chevy truck with new badges. They don't even have any added luxury that you can't order as an option on the Chevy anymore.

The reason they do it, I'm guessing, is because it's cheaper to retrim and rebadge a given unibody for different makes than it is to run different unibodies for each and every make. Costs more to build 'em, design 'em, service 'em, etc etc.

It's not just the Domestics doing it, either. Nissan makes the Suzuki Ecuador. I know this for fact as I've seen row upon row of Ecuadors parked outside the end of the Smyrna, TN Nissan line. Nissan has got to be making those things if they're sitting there. They're also parked next to the Frontiers and they're shaped identically. Mazda's B2300 is a Ford Ranger, and they don't even do a thorough rebranding job as there's still blue ovals stamped/cast into the innards of the thing. I think the Mazda Tribute is a rebadged Edge or Escape, but I'm not sure on that one. And Chevy decided to rebrand a Daewoo for their sub-10K piece of crap segment instead of building their own, so not all Domestic rebrands are of another platform in that company's inventory.

My rigs:

1985 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci OHV inline six | 4-speed OD manual | 310K | No power brakes | Running 100% - It hasn't driven this good in 15 years!

1984 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci six | granny four | 3.55 rear end | 210K | Brakes shot. Rear drums are doing most of the work. Not fit to drive due to that.
1997 Ford Explorer XLT | 4.0L Vulcan V6 | 5-speed automatic | shift-on-the-fly 4WD | 210,000 miles | Running 95% - Needs brakes on all four corners + bald tires
1989 Ford F150 | 300cid six...again | 5-speed | 4x4 | 160K | Needs brakes done as well. Oi!

Incorrect. GMC is upscale from Chevy. Ever heard of Denali? Chevrolet doesn't have a "Denali" or anything like it. They have LS, LT, LTZ. With GMC i don't even believe you can BUY cars without power windows and locks anymore..almost all of them have leather. They really are significantly more upscale since the early 2000s. Chevy makes your run of the mill vehicle, GMC is a step up, Buick is another step up, and Cadillac is all out. Olds got the axe because they didn't really fit anywhere, and they were competing with Chevy.

Ford is the cheapest with the 15K sticker focus with no options.

Nissian has the Murano - 28K base - 40K with all the options
Infiniti has the FX35 (which is twice the price for not much more) 42K base 54.5K with the same options. Their almost the exact same cars.
