Default Problem with not starting

I'm going to be working on a friend's Nissan this week, and Here's what I know:

It just had a battery replaced not long ago. but won't crank over (no sound)

Her son had ghetto rigged the brake lights to run off the battery only, off of a toggle switch. It originally had a after market stereo system installed, but it was removed.

I haven't looked at the car yet, but will be Monday.

I'm assuming either a fried starter/solenoid, loose wires, bad ground, or a short somewhere in the ghetto wiring. Anyone have any other idea?

Try to rig a remote switch directly to the solenoid. Then, with the parking brake applied, car in neutral or park, and with you off to the side of the car, hit the button and see what it does.

If it cranks over properly then you have a major wiring issue. If it clunks and doesn't crank, siezed starter. If it clicks rapidly you have a weak connection or dead battery. If it doesn't do anything at all you have an open in the high current wiring or the solenoid is bad.


If it cranks over properly, do this test again with the ignition on. It should fire up.

can I just short it with a screwdriver?

Given your luck I wouldn't. But you actually could just make sure not to short the wrong ones. Try knocking on the starter with a hammer while he try's to crank.

I don't know how it is on the Nissan, but on my friends Tempo, it was 2 lines that were hooked up. battery to starter. done.

You can short the solenoid with a screwdriver, but it's much safer and easier to use a switch attached at the same points instead. Especially if it startles you or the screwdriver welds itself in(Which it may do, it's going to get quite hot).


I'd use a screwdriver on my Ford, but that's because my starter solenoid is in a really easy to reach location on the fender about a foot from the battery. The Nissan will have it mounted on the starter.

YES. If you use a toggle one you may damage the starter should the engine actually start.

They actually make switches explicitly for this purpose, by the way. Lemme see if I can find you one.

Edit: Googled and found one on Amazon for 10 bucks.
