Default TwIsT has a new toy!

Sorry Speed, copying you.

So I picked up that 1999 Cherokee Sport that I found on craigslist for $1500. It's the 4.0L with an auto. Surprisingly, even with 245k miles(yes you read that right) the undercarriage is damn near rust free and there's a very, very small amount of surface rust on the bottom of the doors and on the roof. The transmission shifts from P-R, P-D, R-D, D-R, D-P, and R-P all very fast and the transfer case is easy to shift from 2HI, 4HI, N, and 4LO.

The engine runs and sounds great minus the AC compressor. It whines but I knew this ahead of time and he said it's just a junkyard compressor from a YJ. I rarely use the AC but I turned it on and the air goes from engine burning hot to ice cold in about 20 seconds, so no problem there.

The tires are like new with probably 70-80% tread left and they're BF Goodrich A/T's.

So far the only thing my dad and I have seen(he went down with me) that needs to be fixed is an exhaust clamp is loose and has a slight leak, and it needs a brake job soon. Other than that for 245k miles this Jeep still has a LOT of life in it and runs like a champ.

I'll get pictures up soon.

That's why I never approve or disapprove of a potential car purchase solely on the mileage.

Exactly. My dad said "Rabble rabble 245k is too much rabble angry disgruntled father advice rabble." I told him to just come with me and check it out and even he was shocked by the great condition it's in.

Here it is. Crappy cell phone pics with a really really sunny day...

The interior is also pretty immaculate for 245k.

Oooh...one of the VERY few Chrysler products I would buy.

Yeah that 4.0 looks like it's been around the blcok a few times. Also looks pretty clean, I don't see any major oil spray all over everything. That's a good sign, as when you get that it means the front main/timing cover/front of sideplate/front of valve cover is leaking and oil is getting onto the belts. I also don't see any spray in the back, which means the rear main is still holding as well. And you said it runs flawlessly, so that's a good sign for the internals...what's the oil look like? And do you have a decently strong magnet you can stick to the dipstick?

Yeah. The guy I bought it from said this was his girlfriend's dad's DD the day he got it with double digit factory miles and he was a mechanic. Says Mobil 1 has been the only oil used in the engine. Not sure about the appearance of the oil, said he changed it two weeks ago and hasn't driven it much since he's tried to sell it, his girlfriend just bought a Grand Cherokee, he owns a mid 90's Wrangler and has an 81 CJ project.

He also made mention of that the first week he got it, when he changed the oil the old filter's gasket stuck to the pump and when he put the new filter on he said it sprayed oil all over but it did it in his drive way so he didn't drive it at all until he took the old gasket off and got the filter on correctly. If you were to look at the distributor side of the engine there's oil all over that he never cleaned up. It just needs a good pressure washing.

Don't think I have a magnet that would stick to the dipstick unless my dad has one of those magnetic telescoping things somewhere around his tool box.

Not even a fridge magnet? You don't need much to tell. Stick it on near the oil and you'll see pretty clearly if anything's coming apart.

I noticed it has numerical oil PSI and water temp gauges. I trust those are in order? If they are looks like the motor's fine.

Yeah they both work fine. No, I really don't have a fridge magnet that isn't a fufu picture or design magnet, lol.
