Default Need halp!

I have the Z24I engine in my hardbody. The one with the 4-cyl and 8 plugs. Anyways, I had a sudden urge to see if my plugs matched the cap, they didn't. So, I proceeded to fix them according to the Haynes manual (very vague, dont get it if it covers more than 20 years of the same car in the same book). That made my engine run like crap. If I hit the accelerator, it'll backfire then proceed to stall. I can get her out of idle then drive it normally. It's only at idle when she'll backfire and stutter. Plus, I'm smelling lots of gas going down the exhaust. I talked to a friend (I trust this guy over any other mechanic any day) and he suggested that the timing might be off. As well as, the plugs being screwed up. I'm going to look at the vacuum lines tomorrow morning.

IF ANYBODY HAS ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THE Z24I ENGINE, Please be kind as to walk me through. Thank you very much.

No idea about that engine, but it sounds to me like your plugs are gapped wrong or you put the wires back wrong. More likely the latter.

We changed plugs on my dads old 89 F250... idiot friend reversed two of the 8 wires. Ran OK, but not right. Found it about 4 months later... and about 30 gallons of gas wasted, lol.

But how can I have put the wires on backwards if I followed the Haynes manual? It was running fine before I did it, but now I have no clue what the order was.

We thought we followed the diagram right too. Pull them ALL, and go 1 by 1 because its really easy to mess up.

Hate to say it, but tolja so! lol.

I knew I recognized it.

It'll be a massive difference when you get it right lol.

Question- Why Champion plugs?
I'd have to say, Bosche +2 Platinums are the best I've used so far.
Love to try the Bosche Iridiums though.

I got the plugs and the wires for $30.

A friend of mine hooked me up.

HAHA!! I fixed it! With the help of my neighbor of course. Turns out the distributor is off by 4 plugs... OMGWTFBBQ!! So we had a wild hunch and stuck the number 1 where the 3, or 4, I forget, plug is supposed to be and followed the diagram from there. Once we got it all hooked back up, she started up right away. I haven't missed the sound of my engine more.
