Default Impossible to choose what car I want.

I am having some much trouble choosing my first car. I have a fairly large budget and of course want a performance car. I keep going back and forth between tons of different choices. I was thinking about getting a Neon SRT-4 since they are cheap and quite fast plus they would get around reasonably well in the winter. However I am also tempted to buy a Lancer Evolution VIII since they have mind boggling performance and for about $4,000 you can get them up to 400 horsepower with supercar acceleration and speed. Of course I have also considered getting a bit older slightly tamer and much cheaper performance car to use for a year until I buy a really nice one. Something like a 2nd gen Eclipse GSX or GS-T or 3-4th gen Prelude. I have a maximum budget of $400 a month with a $5,000 downpayment. However if it is going to be at the maximum of the budget I would like a good reason offered for why I should spend that much versus other cars. Basically I want to hear people thoughts and suggestions on what car I should get. Also RWD is pretty much out since I live in Montana and this car is going to be my daily driver unless it is lower in the pricing arrangement to allow me to purchase a beater to use in the winter.

I am a good driver already and if I do wreck the car I will just get a check from the insurance company for the full price of the car so it isn't a large concern. It will be the first car that I actually owned.

I will try very hard not to kill myself. From the reviews I have read they are easily controllable at speed and very easy to drive at the limit. I am not a really crazy speed maniac though. I can control my urge to go fast until I can get to proper venues.

this should be a no brainer, evo should definately be your choice. even if it is not the 8th gen, the 7th or 6th generation will still run circles around the other cars you've listed on a track. and AWD will be better at bad weather condition than FWD

You will definately have fun with an AWD car the most. I would reccommend an Audi 90 Quattro 20V. Its not all that fast, but still very fun and really cheap. $2k for a good one...And if you have the money (another 3k) and shop/skills, you can do a 10vt/20vt swap. The 20vt is a 215hp stock motor, and with very few upgrades(included in the 3k budget) can push 300.

Go for the '92 Nissan 240SX drop an SR20DETT engine in it and WHAM! Got yourself 400+ ponies. I should warn you though... SR20DETT engines are hard to find in USA.

A decent looking 240 would set you back around $2k. The engine probably another $500-$1500, I honestly have no clue how much the engine actually is. So you're looking at a max of $4k. That's not bad.
