Default Second Car for Teenager

Hey all, I'll be selling my '81 El Camino soon. Reason being it gets terrible gas mileage and it really isn't that great of a car for a teenager. It'll only seat one passenger and I hardly ever use the bed.

So! I was going to sell it and buy another car. Both of my parents will each give me a couple grand to help buy a new one, plus how ever much the El Camino sells for.

My dad says I should get a Jap car and my mom says I should get something that doesn't burn a lot of gas. Yeah, I was thinking Honda, too. Basically, the only Honda car that I can recall liking very much is the Prelude. I think they look pretty sweet. They have decent power, I think the most powerful engine being like a 2.4l, 200HP.

Any other thoughts here? I just want something economical, a little sportier than a Camry, and light on the insurance. Thanks guys.

I would say look at a Prelude (2.2 liter Vtec with 200hp), Eclipse GST or GSX both with turbocharged 200hp 2 liter the GST is FWD and the GSX is AWD, Acura Integra GSR and Type R the GSR is a bit cheaper and easier to find with a 175 hp 1.8 liter Vtec the Type R is considerably lighter with a 200hp 1.8 liter Vtec with stiffened suspension and very high handling limits but it a little extreme for most people, the Subaru WRX (AWD with a turbocharged 2 liter producing 227 hp) is another good choice especially if you are looking at four doors but the fuel economy is a bit worse than the others listed at about 26 to 20 mpg.

Thanks man, the Subaru sounds good, but my parents want me to get something that is cheap to work on, if and when I would need some repairs. I'm not sure how Subaru fits in the spectrum of cheap maintenance as far as cars go, but in all of my experiences, imports have been kinda expensive, besides most of the Japanese/Asian cars. I hardly ever see any Subaru repair places around here. But, remember, we're making my parents happy before I with this whole repair thing. Plus, anything with "turbocharged" in the name is not going to look good on an insurance bill for a 16 year old.

All of those cars come in classified as sports cars to insurance companies so the real difference between the prices is going to be age. The WRX is very well known for reliability and low running costs. As for working on it yourself that really depends on your level of mechanical savvy. Nice thing about WRXs is that they are quite popular so when you go shopping for them you have a lot to choose from and you can usually find at least a few good examples locally.
