Default New Subaru

Hi All, New to the forum and the Subaru World. Just bought a new Subaru and now the dealer is pushing real hard to buy Rustproofing and Undercoating. I previously drove Hondas and never bought any of the above. Never had a problem, and I keep my cars for 10 years or more. Dealer says Subaru is not up to Honda standards when it comes to rustproofing. Is this true or am I being sold a lot of unnecessary extras? Is rustproofing and undercoating really necessary for longevity? Thanks.

How much are they asking for it? What does the rustproofing plan entail (warranty years, what it covers, if you get money back selling it to the dealer before the warranty expires, etc.)? How long does the normal Subaru warranty last in that regard? Does this rust proofing involve coating the entire surface of the car (which may have other benefits such as protecting against rock dings, etc.)? I assume you are located where winter is an issue? These are all things to consider... I ended up doing this for my Hyundai Sonata because of all the extra benefits it entailed that I touched on above.

I live in northern Ohio. Considered part of the rustbelt. The car is garaged when at home. Dealer wants $300.00 for the rustproof/undercoating. Special price till 9/30/2010. Hope this helps

What about my other questions? What's the usual price?

It might help a little but I think the garage is good enough. But that's just my opinion.

If Ohio uses salt, me personnelly I would as it helps the value of the car in the later years.

You can never be too careful, I would go with it. Here in Ohio we use salt like crazy. Once it starts rusting, it'll be hard to stop.

But if he has to drive it outside, how does the garage prevent him from being affected by the salts that he accumulates in the process? The snow itself isn't the problem; otherwise I'd agree with you.
