Default 4.0 Jeep XJ/MJ's

I am looking at the 4.0 MJ(Comanche) or a 4.0 XJ(Cherokee).
I am interested in the common problems/reliability/were the look for rust/etc. I know there is large aftermarket support for these vehicles.
I would want a Comanche most of all but they are harder to find, followed by the 2 door Cherokee, then the 4 door last.
It would be a dd with a couple of occasional ventures off-road
I know it will most likely be an automatic since that is what most came as.

They'll be pretty reliable if they're a stickshift. Hell I'd love to have a 5-speed 4.0 MJ myself. I'm not so sure with the automatics since Mopar made the automatics and they're not exactly all that good at automatics. Rust is going to be the same spots any pickup/SUV will rust at.

1984 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci six | granny four | 3.55 rear end | 210K | Brakes shot. Rear drums are doing most of the work. Not fit to drive due to that.
1997 Ford Explorer XLT | 4.0L Vulcan V6 | 5-speed automatic | shift-on-the-fly 4WD | 210,000 miles | Running 95% - Needs brakes on all four corners + bald tires
1989 Ford F150 | 300cid six...again | 5-speed | 4x4 | 160K | Needs brakes done as well. Oi!

Umm let's see... Mine just rolled 250k today and it's still going like a beast, even with the Mopar A4.

I've got some blow by, but it's to be expected with that much mileage.

There's some rust on the rocker panels beneath the doors, just surface, though.

Be careful with the stock Dana 30 front axle. It's fragile as fudge. I'd upgrade to at least a D44 over time.

Other than that those 4.0 Jeeps are, literally, bullet proof. Mine is proof of that. Stock engine, transmission, t-case, differentials, and axles and it STILL turns over on the first try.

You are trying to find a new car literally every other week, when are you going to give it a rest?

I wouldn't worry too much a bout miles if the suspension and tranny are good - those 4.0s are the best motors Chrysler ever made...or AMC
