Default Car radar detector recommendations.

So right now I'm into getting a radar detector. I drive too fast and nearly lost my license, I got lucky and the cop gave me a warning. I live in the NJ/NY area if that helps narrow down the recommendations. I prefer it to be under $400.

You don't need a radar detector just dont speed.

I just dropped a 350 into my car and it is tough not to really see what it can do. But cops don't give me a second look because I am always going the speed limit. Its tough but I think you can manage.

Not to mention that they aren't always reliable and you end up getting caught anyway. So yeah, drive the limit or 5 over at most, saves you $400.

For just a radar detector, the Valentine 1 is the top dog and costs $400.

But you won't be 100% safe, ever. Radar detectors don't detect all police. The most common form of catching speeders is "pacing," in which the officer will drive at the same speed as you, in your blind spot, to verify your speed without using radar.

Another common method other than radar is laser, or LIDAR. Radar detectors today can detect laser, but laser guns can obtain speed readings nearly instantly, making the radar detector simply a ticket-detector. A laser jammer is what is used to combat this, but this will run you another ~$500 and will take time and effort to set up correctly.
Note that both laser jammers and radar detectors are illegal in VA if you ever go there.

Just laser jammers illegal in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah.

Radar detectors are only illegal in DC (and Virginia).

edit: just a quick list of bands/methods used in NY:

KA, K, Laser, Airborn VASCAR, POP, unmarked, X

Airborn VASCAR basically just means that there will be a guy in an airplane timing how long it takes you to drive between a series of markings on the pavement (speed = distance / time).

If you ABSOLUTELY must have a radar detector, I recommend the Valentine 1. It's right at $400 but it's one of the best detectors outside an Escort 9500ix which is a $500 unit.

Honestly though, cops are using LIDAR more and more and these are RADAR detectors, not laser. Only way to make yourself literally invisible(besides not speeding and following the laws of the road ANYWAY) is by investing nearly $2000-$4000 on jammers, multiple units, and hell, even a CB radio.

Just don't speed and you'll be fine.

EDIT: Lol Nate and I said basically the same thing.

Your gonna get what you pay for with a radar detector. Like Twisted recommended, the Valentine is really the standard setter as far as detectors go. Thats probably the only detector i could trust, they are pricey, but worth it!

There are times where some people are going double the limit and I'll just follow along and do double the limit. I know it's a huge risk but a friend of mine had a radar/laser detector, he was doing 150mph in his M3 and the detector alarmed him about 1 mile before the speed trap.

Its called being responsible. Watch your speed, set your cruise, leave places early so you can be on time and not have to rush. You're not only risking your license, you're risking your life and everyone elses.
