Default My "friend" broke my vehicle..

Given to me by my father.. it has problems but it worked and started in -40c just fine but it don't work (move) anymore.. its a 1993 Dodge Caravan.

Yesterday my "friend", quote that word cause we aren't even on good terms... was spinning the wheels alot taking turns with me as we tried to get it out of the pothole like rear wheel marks they made in the melting ice.. its FWD and they were sitting on the ice just spinning, though he was more "aggressive" at it, I mean that by he was pushing the pedal more and zigzagging the wheel at the same time which seemed to work as it was almost out but then out of no where there was a moderately loud snapping sound from both front wheels.

Now whenever its put in any gear except neutral that sound comes back and the speedometer near instantly shoots up to about 40 km/h then slowly drops back as well as the grinding noise, but the noise continues to stay in the background, this is with the brake on at all times as well.. if I even tap the gas the grinding gets really loud and theres no wheel rotation, if I put it in neutral the noise stops completely and I can rev it all I want.

As you can probably tell I know nothing about vehicles.. I don't even know how to put gas in it or check oil (but it was checked by my friend's father and its got oil) I only had a learners license for 1.5 months. I don't think its the transmission as the noise doesn't seem to be coming from it, it kind of sounds like whatever thing under the front end that makes the wheels spin snapped or broke off.

Does anyone know what this is and what I should do about it..?

Sounds like a differential, or both axles broke simultaneously.
But its most likely the transmission.

Its not worth replacing the transmission in that car I'd bet. For the same price you could buy some late '90s car.

edit: some guys I was talking to say "Dodge GC, yep, definitely the trans"
"especially with the noise"

Even if one axle broke the other wheel wouldn't spin since it's probably an open diff. Axle or CV joint is my guess

Ya 2nd on the tranny, sounds like the same symptons when the transmission went on my truck. Might want to check the transmission pan for metal.

Gearbox or axle let go. Not a big surprise, and being a Caravan it's disposable. I say junk and replace, it isn't going to be worth repairing.

My rigs:

1985 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci OHV inline six | 4-speed OD manual | 310K | No power brakes | Running 100% - It hasn't driven this good in 15 years!

1984 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci six | granny four | 3.55 rear end | 210K | Brakes shot. Rear drums are doing most of the work. Not fit to drive due to that.
1997 Ford Explorer XLT | 4.0L Vulcan V6 | 5-speed automatic | shift-on-the-fly 4WD | 210,000 miles | Running 95% - Needs brakes on all four corners + bald tires
1989 Ford F150 | 300cid six...again | 5-speed | 4x4 | 160K | Needs brakes done as well. Oi!

Ugh.... bye bye first vehicle :| He says the insurance company will pay $2000~$3000 for it.. seems too easy to be true but if it is then hopefully I can get a slightly more decent used car for that price.

Thats surprising, I would think they wouldnt give you more than 1500 for it. You can pick up a decent mileage blazer for 2-3k

Why is the insurance company going to pay you anything? The car wasn't involved in an accident and they don't pay out on things that just tear up or break from driving them.

Pot hole = road hazard
Covered by some insurance companies.
