Default '73 Power Wagon brake lights

I have a 1973 dodge power wagon. It's my first vehicle which my dad bought for me. I was 16. Now I'm just a little over 18. I have done a good deal of work to it including fixing the brake lights and brake hardware, learning to drive a manual and fixing tons of other "little" things. I want to replace the 1157 bulbs with 2357? Close enough. But I want something much brighter. I have ordered some relays. I have plans to cut the wires for the bulbs and run it into the relay coil(one relay for each filament. One for turn and one for brakes. Four in total). That way the relay is triggered by me hitting the brakes for example. And a couple wires from the battery through fuse of course into the relay (NO) contacts. That way the relay is triggered and I am removing most load from the turn signals, hazards and brake light system. I want to do that do add brighter bulbs. For my safety. I want if possible to add halogen bulbs to the truck., if it won't melt the lens. I will test the passenger side. I have a spare lens for that side. I just want to be as safe as possible for a truck that turns as wide as a semi but stops in twice the distance. If anyone can give me suggestions that would be great. I'll take anything. I've done a lot of work so far and want to do so much more. As a side note the transmission is a four speed. At 60mph the engine is at 3000rpm. Is that harmful to the engine? Thanks in advance for any help.

After a lot of online looking I have painted both taillights reflectors white. And replaced the 1157 bulbs to 2357. They do seems to brighter as I first tested it in the right side. Both my mom and dad thought it looked brighter. I may buy some halogen bulbs at some time and test them out to see how they work. Is there anything else that may be done to possible improve the safety? And no. I won't get a new car.

Sounds like a fun truck. With as loud as that thing probably is you don't have to worry too much about people or animals noticing you. I would consider a bull bar with some high power LED lights from PIAA, KC, or the like to truly increase your ability to see in un populated areas.

As for the motor RPM issue, trucks of that age weren't really meant for the highway. Ways around that are to upgrade the trans or change out the differential gearing. If shes a 2WD then swapping out the diff gears should be pretty straight forward for someone with experience. The trade off will be that the tires won't want to spin when you takeoff from a stop, but if you are looking to increase your efficiency and drive-ability it is probably worth the sacrifice. Personally I measure my trucks mileage in smiles per gallon and as such run 4.10 gears to make it more fun

It is a lot of fun. Even if the bench seat is very hard to sit in for long times. The truck is 4wd. I live off a dirt road now. So that's needed at times. Along with much snow. I was wanting to build if I can't find a very large, heavy and unbreakable push bumper. I found a couple cool pictures online from trucks of the same age. But can't find one at all talked about. Oh well. Guess I need to learn how to weld at some point.

Haha, thats about as redneck as you can get

Something like that wouldn't be to difficult to make out of steel if youre good with a mig welder though.

I wasn't thinking redneck but more like indestructible. Like if I hit someone or something I could get out and complain about my scratched paint. Ignoring the fact their car is destroyed.

Not thinking of doing it as a intensional act. There are a lot of stupid deer up here which get nailed all year long. And you know just how effective 4 drum brakes are in not stopping.
