Default HID Lights

Hey people.

I'm probably gonna go HID lights for the Blazer. I already ordered LED tail lights for $10 shipped (mainly for reduced power and enhanced safety) and now i'm looking at HIDs. I'm going to probably get these in 5000kelvin:

I've heard DDM Tuning is the best site for them.

Ideas? Are they even legal?

You'll never see HID lights in the nose of my truck. The sealed-beam halogens I have now can already light up the road for a quarter mile if I ask them to.

Clean those stupid plastic covers and aim your stockers cocrectly, you'd be suprized how far out you can see with them.

1985 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci OHV inline six | 4-speed OD manual | 310K | No power brakes | Running 100% - It hasn't driven this good in 15 years!

1984 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci six | granny four | 3.55 rear end | 210K | Brakes shot. Rear drums are doing most of the work. Not fit to drive due to that.
1997 Ford Explorer XLT | 4.0L Vulcan V6 | 5-speed automatic | shift-on-the-fly 4WD | 210,000 miles | Running 95% - Needs brakes on all four corners + bald tires
1989 Ford F150 | 300cid six...again | 5-speed | 4x4 | 160K | Needs brakes done as well. Oi!

Regardless of what the manufacturer says, they are not DOT legal to put on a vehicle that did not have HID's in the first place.

What I have always heard, is that replacing a factory bulb which utilizes a filament with one that does not have one is altering a vehicle beyond the manufacturer's specs, and is illegal. That is basically what any police officer will tell you, as they have told me.

There was a pdf on the U.S DOT site I was reading where they performed a light output test, and even the Philips brand HID's retrofit bulbs failed miserably. The light was scattered everywhere and actual usable light output was worse than the traditional bulbs.

The same goes for the silverstar bulbs, which I have in my jeep right now. They produce less light than the traditional bulbs do.

So you can use them if you want, but you will probably be blinding people unless they are aimed very carefully.

Speed_Demon is correct about the law. Every vehicle built or brought into North America is required to meet safety standards. Law are in effect to maintain those standards so that some idiot doesn't paint his tail lights black so he looks cool.

That said, I love my HID's

I believe in most cases, if the mods to your car do not create confusion, like red park lights or signal lights up front, or cause other drivers to loose sight of hte road, like HID's with no low beam, the cops areound here at least leave you alone.

My truck is a 1989, defiantly way before HID's came into being. I've passed many cops here and never even had them look at my truck. However, I've also passed several mid 90's imports with HID's blazing in my eyes.

When I bought my HID's I chose the high/low beam option. My low beam is no more blinding to oncoming drivers than my old halogen H4's.

I chose HID's for safety, not for the cool factor.

Use common sense to keep yourself and others on the road safe.

A short list of "stupid" mods.
  • Painting/smoking your tail lights black
  • Replacing your OEM suspension with hydraulics
  • Red lights up front

SUV's with HID's are probably the most annoying thing on the road for drivers of smaller vehicles like myself. I swear to god one day I'm just going to get out of my car...
