Default 1984 trans am

So I saw this very nice 1984 black and gold trans am on craigslist and kind of fell in love with it, but it was 6,500$. Then I see this other one for sale, for only 1,200. It's not in great condition, paint is fading a little and a little rust in some spots. Needs new tires, and a fuel pump. Doesn't have the decals on it.
It has 170,000 miles but only 40,000 on the motor. Interior is decent, everything there, just not in perfect shape, has t- tops, apparently don't leak.
So I kind of want to turn this car into the one I saw. But I don't know if I should get into it because it might end up costing alot more. Cause 170,000 miles is alot isn't it? But the motor only has 40k so is that not that bad?
But heres the thing, he said it was sitting outside all winter.
That can cause alot of problems, can't it?
It's not running but he just says it needs a new fuel pump.
I just don't know if its worth it cause If I get a new paint job, tires, fuel pump, and a few other misc things, thats going to be over 3 grand, plus the 1,200 I spent in the first place, and I don't want to spend 4,200.
What do you think? Sitting outsdie all winter, 170,000 miles,
worth it, or don't bother?
thanks

The pic is what I want it to look like

Sitting outside in the winter is fine, my friend stores his '97 T/A outside every winter..

Need more info on the car. Motor? Tranny?

run! 305 has been known as one of the worst "HO" motors of all time, and 170k on the original automatic means it needs a tranny.

I'd buy it as a rolling shell and nothing else. $1200 for a rolling shell third gen? Forget it. Unless the body is completely mint. But it sounds like the interior is shot.

The 305 HO was the highest performance engine offered in 1984, in the Trans Am. I owned one of these and at peak they were running 190HP. As long as you don't mind not quick, they are decent to drive and could be optioned with 6 speakers and 4 wheel disc brakes. Again though, not fast.

One of those cars that look better than they perform. It will have torque rather than power, will be no faster than the average compact but it will feel faster and you will look cooler.

Just think of yourself as this guy.

He said he changed it over to fuel injection to give it more power. Does that make much of a difference? I mentioned that after so many miles it would probably need the tranny replaced but he said it's been running just fine so not sure what to think. It's not running at the moment cause it needs the fuel pump and the tires so it's not like I can give it a test drive.
I'm probably going to pass on it, but just though i'd ask about the fuel injection and what not.
thanks

My personal view is modifications = bad. An EFI conversion would be very in depth and I wouldn't trust a PO to do it.

If you were going to mess with this, your best bet is a straight swap for a 350, its very very easy to do. Again I say, they are good looking cars, and its still a small block, so it sounds good too.
