Default Looking for a Used Car under 5k

Hi,

I am a first time car-buyer, and the top limit of my budget is realistically around $4000 or slightly above, including fees and taxes. I am about to start my senior year of high school and I have a job making around $400 a month (give or take), hence the reason for the relatively small budget. I can make a down payment of around $1300 with my parents' help and I am looking to keep my monthly auto loan payment around $80-$100 (less is obviously better). I obviously still have to factor in insurance, fuel, and maintenance, and I would like to keep at least a little bit of my monthly paycheck for non car-related expenses and savings.

In terms of the car itself, fuel economy and reliability are the two biggest factors: I would like my gas bill to be as low as possible, and I don't have the ability to consistently fund costly repairs. I would like the car to look decent, but that is not an absolute must. I am relatively inexperienced with cars, so what cars in the $4000 and under range would you recommend? A 2000 Honda Accord (give or take 2 years) seems to be the best option at this point from my research, but I am definitely open to other options.

Hi.

Where do you live? Snow or no snow? Stick or automatic?

I live in the northwest Chicago suburbs, so I do drive through decent levels of snow in the winter. Also, I would rather automatic, but wouldn't mind learning stick if I have to.

I live in the west suburbs and you will have a tough time finding a Honda that isn't a scrap heap or boy racered out for a good price. If you dont mind driving a pickup you sound like a perfect candidate for an s10/Sonoma or a blazer/jimmy/bravada commonly known as s-trucks. They are a dime a dozen around here.

Just an example

Thanks for the ideas, I'll definitely look into the pickups.

Also, any opinions on a 2000ish Ford Taurus?

Not good, but not bad. Middle of the road car to get you from point a to point b, nothing more.

What would be the best sedan for fuel efficiency and reliability for a reasonable price, besides the Accord?
