Default 1997 cadillac sts head gasket repair estimate

So someone is selling a 1997 cadillac sts with 105k miles in good shape for 1000, I got him down to 800. but the head gasket needs to be repaired or replaced, he said it overheats if you drive it.
Does anyone have an idea how much it would be cost to fix or replace it?
My dads good with cars so maybe he could do most of the work, how much would it be if we did all of the work?
thanks

Is that the 4.9 aluminum block engine?

Those are VERY expensive to repair. Once the heads are off, the O-ring at the bottom of the removable cylinder is at risk of leaking. To replace the O-ring requires a complete tear down of the engine.

If you don't replace the O-rings you are at risk of getting coolant into the oil, not a good thing to happen!

I'm sorry but I do not like those engines.

Is it the Northstar (4.6) or the 4.9?

Head gaskets aren't that expensive, probably do the whole works with intake gaskets and all for $150 or less depending on which HGs you get.

It is quite a bit of work though.
