Default Buying a fixer upper? Right path to go or not?

Im 19, have little experience with cars and have some time on my hands.
Gotta start somewhere, anyways Im looking for a decent reliable car thats also fun to drive.
I saw a couple Rx-8s on craigslist with a messed up engine.
And same for 240 sx s13's.

2005 RX-8 RX8 6 Speed Manual Loaded 45k miles needs TLC As Is
2004 Mazda RX-8 (Engine Out)

I have about $5500-7k to spend.
Is it worth it to rebuild the engines or either buy a new rotory or just swap it?

What would you do with $5500 -7k

Rotary engines are know for going bad, a very short life. Difficult to find a good one.

Swap in an LS engine for 5 times the torque.
