Default Thinking Subaru for next car

Disclaimer: Like all my posts, I'm thinking a few months ahead. No moves will be made until then.

I'm seeing a bunch of late 90's, early 00's Subarus on Craigslist for an appealing price.

A good chunk of them are high miles, by default.

The wife and I have decided to sell the Sonata at our earliest convenience. After all immediate repairs are made, of course. She will have her minivan, leaving me to purchase a car that fits me, rather than fit the family in whole.

With that said, what are some nuances of Subarus that I can expect? I know that the boxer engines absolutely love low weight oils.

I have never drove a symmetrical AWD vehicle, and clutch based to boot. I know that will be an interesting experience.

Other than powertrain/drivetrain nuances, what about exterior and interior things to watch out for?

I want to be able to look at a Subie and make an informed (as much as possible) decision. It will be a pet project, but it'll be a DD as well.

Thanks guys.

The 2.5 engines are known for head gasket problems. The 2.0 turbo engines don't seem to have this problem.

The fuel injector O-rings are known to leak in cold weather.

Other than those items I don't know of any other real issues to be concerned about.

My son has had 2 Subarus, a 2007 WRX, injector seals were the only issue in 3 years. He now has a 2012 WRX that he bought new, no issues.

My father-inlaw bought a used 2010 Forester a few years ago, no issues.

So, keep an eye on coolant temperatures and look for suspicious leaks.

Thank you.

Honestly they're all known for head gasket problems, some are just worse than others.

So... install fancy coolant temp and oil pressure gauges day one?

I'm kinda dead set on the Subaru make. Whether it's the 2.0 or the 2.5 is yet to be seen. Depends on what is available when I can make the purchase.

Good choice on the Subaru

Are you looking for a sportier car like the WRX or something more practical with a lower cost, like a Forester or standard Impreza?

I'm really liking the Legacy wagons, which comprise the bulk of what's currently available. I saw a couple of Imprezas and an equal amount of Foresters.

I wonder why Legacys are the choice to sell on CL? Hmm...

Boy racers snatch up the Imprezas in record time.

I dunno.... I've been driving in very deep snow and ice this weekend. The R is a freaking champion on it!!!! Wish there was a disable ABS function though, so I can turn it off in snow.
