Default Cars for the megacommuter

Hello all,

So I have just taken a job that requires ~130 mile/day (all highway) commute for the next 3 years. My 1999 nissan altima is just not going to cut it. I was looking for some suggestions on cars. My only requirements are:

1. really good fuel efficiency
2. cruise control
3. budget friendly

I don't have a lot to spend... still waiting to hear from my bank but under $18,000 and preferably under $16,000. I've never bought a new car always drove used ones into the ground but with this commute I need something reliable that won't always be in the shop.

I know there probably aren't a lot of cars out there that fit the bill but... any advice?

You've got two options for that.

-1.4L turbo Chevy Sonic (1.8 is cheaper, spend the extra $700 for a FAR better engine and better fuel economy)
-Ford Fiesta

Both are going to be manuals.

My pick would be the Sonic by quite a bit.

the lowest level civic is around 18 grand and has a pretty decent fuel economy.

You should really consider comfort as the biggest factor. Many jump to MPG, but comfort should be more important, especially with that major commute. Personally, I'd buy a XC70, Tahoe Hybrid, or S80.
But I'm a fanboy.

For you? I suggest the Sonic or Cruze, both by Chevrolet. Personal favorite of the two is the Cruze. Test drive one. Go for a Certified Pre-Owned 2013.

Any hybrid for stormy weather/winter. And a 600cc sport bike all other times. The bike will be fun, and gets ridiculous fuel economy.

But in all seriousness, when you find a car you like, look at it on Fuelly.com and see what owners real world fuel economy and experiences are. Dont just go by what the sticker says on the lot.

Seeing as he stated he wants new, I didn't recommend slightly used. But yes, a very slightly used 2012 or 2013 Cruze is a great choice. A new one, however, with the 1.4 turbo engine, will be very tight in his price range.

Where are these mythical $18k hybrids?

If it's got a battery, Tesla or get out

Thanks for the help. What do you guys think about maybe a 2010+ certified pre owned car? Any different suggestions on make/model?

Certified pretty owned is a good idea. I still say look for cars with good fuel economy, and the best comfort ratings.
