Default need recommendation on a tunable sleeper

So I will be buying my first car soon and seeing as how I am fresh out of school I don't have much of a budget (less than $5000). I prefer a manual RWD or AWD that I may be able to tune/work on fairly easily (as I am but a learning beginner) and inexpensively (ie. with decent aftermarket support where cost of parts won't shred my wallet)

Other considerations would be efficiency (mpg), decent reliablility (something that needs maintenance so I can work on it but won't break down while on the road). I would not mind getting a sports car but insurance for that is crazy up north here in Toronto, hence the slight preference for a sleeper at this time in my life (don't really care about looks right now). Also being in Canada it will need to be able to handle snow.

From what I know so far I am thinking of a:
volvo v70r
Lancer Evo
Ford Taurus
90's mustang
nissan 240sx & 300

any suggestions, recommendations or opinions?

$5000 will get you a decent car, it won't get you a decent "sleeper".

$5000 budget, get a working body for ~$250-500, put $4500 in the engine and suspension, have no interior but a seat.

Good luck finding a decent car AND purchasing a $2500 turbo upgrade for it on $5k. Get a DD and get a beater you can take to some autocross events or something. No need to upgrade, learn to drive well first.

265 on the dash only thing I'd be worried about. If the suspension hasn't been swapped out by now it's probably due.

The roughly $5000 budget is for the car only, the turbo upgrade would be something i'd work towards when I have the time and some extra funds in the future. So any thoughts about a 'decent' car for under 5k? Getting a DD and a beater sounds great but the insurance up here is ridiculous...

from another forum:
Quote:
7 years G license. Married male. No Accident. 2002 Civic. Live in Scarborough.

Just got renewal letter from Johnson. almost $200 a month! I have been with Johnson for 5 years. They increased my premium almost 50% in 5 years!

Then I got a quota on TD's website. They gave me almost 300 a month! WOW! Car insurance in really CRAZY!
Considering this was a few years ago already and I'm a relatively new driver compared to this guy, so insuring 2 cars would be like:

cow=me

Consider the interior and exterior condition. And the people who own it, and how long they owned it. If everything looks great, give it a drive. These are smooth solid cars. They do not feel like a Honda or Toyota or Chevy or ford. Take it to a mechanic. Many of these have a lot of miles
