Default New Mini Cooper Base vs. Used Mini Countryman All4

I plan to get a Mini soon due to its small size. With about 25k in budget, I can get either a new mini cooper base or a used mini countryman all4 (2011 or 2012 model, ~40k miles).

This will be my only car. I have a long daily commute of 170 miles. I'm in Boston and we get a lot of snow in winter. Car safety in snow is a very important factor in my consideration. I understand the fuel economy of the countryman is low compared to the mini cooper base, but if that means more safety, I'm willing to get the countryman.

I'm considering the Countryman All4 mainly because of its all-wheel-drive feature and good performance in the snow (correct me if I'm wrong). I'm not sure how well the Mini cooper base performs in the snow.

I will stay home on the worst snow days of the year, but I'll have to be on the roads except those few days.

Thanks!

Maintenance is going to be on par with BMW repairs obviously, but despite the looks, I would go for the countryman for that exact reason. Are you set on the mini cooper though? For that price range you could get an all wheel drive car that won't be as expensive to work on. If I got a mini, I would get the john cooper works edition, but that would cost a little more.
