Default Looking for a decent older SUV

I understand "cheap and reliable" are barely in the same category, but it's worth a shot.
My "wish list" is around $4k, and under 140k, if possible. I live in Minnesota, if that helps.
I love the 4Runner, but that's out of my wish list. We have a 2016 and love it.
I love the older (97+) Cherokee's.

Can someone help with the differences and pros/cons of them?

I've been researching the older Cherokee quite a bit, the inline6 seems pretty bulletproof, but have heard some negatives.
Also heard the Xterra does pretty well.

Basically looking for a decently reliable older SUV for not too expensive.
Thanks all!!

Cherokee is a good option. Can't kill those engines.
Xterra and Pathfinder i don't know much about.
Forester isn't much of an's a taller Impreza. If its only snow you're concerned about, it's an option. If you need to tow anything, it's not.

You should also be looking at Blazers. $4k could find you a pretty clean example of an ~02 Blazer with 4x4. 4.3L V6 is one of the most bulletproof engines ever built (it's a GM 350 small block V8 with two cylinders lopped off). I've owned three of these trucks over the years (one '95 and two '96s) and loved em all. Fun trucks. I beat the living snot out of them and they never let me down, all were over 150k, one hit 240k before getting parked in my back yard. The others ran when I sold them.

get 1999-2001 explorer with v8, one of the most reliable suv, stay away from v6, and do not even look at 2002, they changed it that year and it turned out to be worst , and less reliable than old model
