First gen has a solid rear axle, smaller brakes, limited arfter market parts. More prone to rust.

Second gen was a big upgrade. Much better suspension & brakes. The GXL has the biggest brakes of the second gen, and a limited slip diff.

3rd gen is even better. A smaller package, more like a Miata.

I would go for the 3rd gen if it's in your budget.

Beware of high mileage engines. Over 150,000 and you will need an engine. Expensive to do engine work, gas guzzlers for the performance.

I'm putting a Chevy LT1 into a second gen. It's cheaper than rebuilding the rotary engine, faster, and better on gas too!

3rg gen hands down... Nasty cars... But beware of the service life of the rotary engine...

Unless you have a lot of money to sink into your car don't buy a third generation RX-7. Their engines are notoriously unreliable.

Bump for an old thread. If you're getting a Rotary, go to pettitracing.com and read their FAQ on how to properly take care of your Rotary. Then go to RX7club.com and register over there and look at some fine examples of some FD's and FC's.

One thing better about a Rotary imo is from what I've heard they're relatively easy to rebuild yourself if you have the proper tools and a DVD guide. I believe there is one on sale right now... A great idea you might wanna tinker around with is try and pick up a low mileage chassis blown motor FD (lots to choose from), and put a little elbow grease into rebuilding the motor yourself.

I haven't Dynoed it yet, but I'll estimate around 280-300RWHP.
