Default Turbo has never worked

I have a Peugeot 406 Rapier HDi 90 and I don't beleive the Turbo has ever worked. I got the car at 6 month old and ~3,000 miles. Unlike the 405 I had previously, there is no obvious increase in revs or power to indicate the turbo kicking in. The garage checked it out but said there was nothing wrong. Could it be something wrong with the electronic engine management or something else?

If I'm not mistaken, the turbo HAS to work unless the car has been modified. Otherwise it won't run.
But I might be way off, so wait for confirmation. :P

Not really familiar with the peugeot as we don't have those in North America, but I looked up the 406 and its a diesel, diesel turbos tend to have a lot of turbo lag, meaning when you push the gas generally the turbo won't kick in till you are at the higher rpms. If your 405 was a gasoline (petrol) then the turbo would have been much more responsive.

If its a diesel turbo, then you will not really notice the turbo spooling up. Turbo diesels rev at low rpm's, so the turbo on them usually kick in at about 1800-2400rpm. And diesels have a very wide tourque band, unlike gas engines. So you dont feel a big gain in power, because u are usually in the tourque bande by the time the turbo has spooled. But if it wasnt working right, or at all, then the engine would run extremely rough when the turbo should be spooled because it will be flooding the engine practically.

Ya I looked up the specs on that car, its only around 110HP not really a screamer, I guess the the reason they put turbos in most diesel cars is so that they accerlerate like a normal gasoline powered car. Reminds me of my fathers 1997 jetta tdi. It accelerates smoothly, but its not a racing car by any means.

No they use turbos to feed more air to the engine... It has nothing to do with trying to accelerate like a normal car. Everyone thinks diesels are big slow cars/trucks... This is false. Way back in the day, they were. But the truth is that a diesel has more power potential than a gas engine. And its starting to show big time in lemans racing and big trucks now days. There are many full size pic up trucks with simple bolt on mods, primarily intake exhaust and a power chip that smoke the hell out most other cars on the road, because they crank out about 550hp and 800ft/lbs of torque!!!

Yes, I know, what I was trying to explain though in the case of his car is that the turbo in his car isn't to turn it into a racing car. Its only 110bhp @ 188 lbs/ft torque. Not sure what model of the 405 he has, searching around the only turbo model of the petrol powered 405 had an bhp output of 197. A lot more then his current diesel car. There are some fast diesel cars out there (bmw 535) but unfortunately it seems his isn't one of them.

You could try and raise the boost pressure

Not everyone needs the billion BHP you have.

If he/she is from the UK then nobody has more than 300bhp in a normal car heck my Astra has around 90bhp and i'm happy with it, as long as it sounds nice I dont care

The turbo sounds like the impeller side is larger than the compressor side. Basically it spins up at low rpm causing it to be at full boost at maybe 2500rpm. I dont see how this is usefull But the car is designed for torque much like a truck. Im sure if you had a full trunk [bonet] and a full load of passengers you wouldn't notice the difference in speed like I would. Your car would be able to tow better and most likely has longer gears. It could be set up for gas mileage. Drop it in the last gear and floor it and no upshift required meaning less fuel needed to pass on the road. Sounds like a practical car to me. much like a sedan or a wagon.

My car on the other hand looses so much speed when i add one passenger. I just got it dynoed for free at my friends shop after i got the new motor. With the simple mods it has. intake exhaust it pulled 146hp and 109ft/lb of tourque. I got this new engine to increase gas mileage. IT is a 1.5 liter sohc Vtec. Swapped out the 1.6 liter sohc Vtec for this one because the motor had a leaking head gasket and close to 240,000 miles on the engine. Now i have less than 60,000 . Soon i will either save for a S2k or buy a 1969 datsun 2000s . It will be a full on project car/sleeper.
