Default Recommendations for used car in PA

Hi everyone, hoping to make use of the collective expertise and brain power here:

We've recently relocated to south-central Pennsylvania from a big city where we depended on public transportation, and are looking for our "first" car -- i.e, our first purchase. I inherited a couple of cars from my dad before moving to the city, but that was more than 20 years ago and my how things have changed. In the years since I've rented a lot of cars for trips and have come to like the compacts (esp. the Focus) a lot.

We'd go for a used Focus, Civic, or Corolla except that we're wondering how important AWD or part-time 2WD is for the roads in our part of the country. Any insight out there as to how valuable either of those would be for a typical Pennsylvania winter?

If it's important enough to spend the extra money, any recommendations as to what would be a good model for drivers who like the compact feel? We'd prefer a good used car and would like to stay below 15-17k if we can. I know that there are compact wagons with AWD but I wonder if there's anything smaller. I've done a lot of research but thought this would also be a good place to seek insight.

I'm a new member. Thanks in advance for any advice.

HF

I've been through two winters in a FWD Civic and I can say that FWD is fine but AWD would be great. If I were you, I would look for a Subaru WRX/STi wagon or an Outback.

The WRX looked a little out of our price range, so we narrowed it to an Impreza, but we haven't seen a good local deal yet. Tested a Legacy yesterday, acceleration and handling were smooth but the ride felt a bit bumpy and it made a ticking sound after we shut it off. (Dealer said it was from the cooling of the stainless-steel exhaust.) Haven't researched the Outback yet, will look more into that. Many thanks!
