Default Chevy Starter question 2 part question please

My 1979 Chevy Truck started making a whirring noise when turning the ignition key on. It would take a couple of times of trying to start it and then it would kick in and start the truck.

I took it in and had a new starter and solenoid put in. The truck started up fine. Drove it to the store. Started it again, it did the whirring noise again one time. Turned the ignition key, and it kicked in.

What should I be checking as possible other problems with this.

Second question,

I remember seeing this guy at the bank with the hood up on his vehicle and he had a wire that he just touched the battery (don't remember it it was the negative terminal or the positive terminal) and it started the car. I'm thinking if I keep having this problem and don't know what else to check, I may try and do the same thing, but not sure how. I'm thinking taking a wire from the - or + on the solenoid??????? and running the wire up through the hood so all I have to do it touch the battery to start the truck if the ignition key won't do it?

Can you help?

Thanks!!

The whirring, is it just the sound of an electric motor whir, or is their a shriek, rip or screech involved?

If it's just a whir, it could be a low voltage condition, battery, poor ground.

I don't think that this is your problem.

If it's a shriek the starter gear is not fully engaging with the flywheel teeth, so the starter gear is grinding off the flywheel teeth. Because of the compression cycles the engine will stop rotating at a few "favorite" positions. The most stopped at position will have the teeth ground down, or actually smeared. The lessor of the stop positions will have less damage and the starter can engage properly at that point.

The thing is if the starter that is not engaging is left too long damage to the flywheel will result.

You will have to remove the starter and look inside at the teeth. Use a large screwdriver and rotate the flywheel to check all the teeth. If you see damaged teeth you will need to remove the transmission and replace the flywheel/flex plate.

In the meantime, if it screeches, stop trying to start it and rotate the engine by hand a 1/4 turn to bring undamaged teeth up to the starter.

It's a whirr. The minute I hear it I stop cranking. It usually kicks in the next time or the time after I turn the ignition key. I'm sure the mechanic would have noticed a problem when he put the new starter in..

If it's really just a whir, I believe the starter solenoid is not pulling the starter drive gear into the flywheel teeth.

This is likely a defective starter. Either the solenoid is defective or the starter has not been assembled correctly (seen this lots of times) and you will have to have it exchanged, and it should be under warranty. Your mechanic should be able to install another for no cost to you. That is what I do for my customers, it's not their fault that the part I bought for their car is defective, he will have to suck it up like a big boy.

The best brands I've used are ACDelco and Bosch, the worst are Wilson, Champion, Fenco and some other that I can't recall right now.

The starter has 2, "possibly" 3 wire connections.

A large black that is the battery positive, this is where the starter draws it's power from.

A much smaller purple one that has battery power when you turn your key to the start position.

If you jump these 2 wires you are doing the same thing as turning the key to the start position. Alternately you could attach a wire to the smaller wire and run it up close to your battery. When you want to crank the engine you would touch this wire to the positive post on the battery.

If your starter is whirring, this will only make it whir when you are not turning the key. The problem is inside the starter, not the wiring going to it.

awesome! Thank you. I'm going to start it tomorrow and see what happens. If it does it again, I'll call the mechanic. I just want to make sure I can get it started to take it to him.

OH what guage wire should I use?

thank you!

For the jumper wire, 12 will do.
