Welcome to carforum.net. Is there any car in particular you were interested in?

Well, my mom is helping me buy it and we kinda have different ideas. I want something cool and zippy but she thinks I need some sort of tank - she says it'll be safer. I have about $8k. She wants me to buy a SUV that a guy at her office is selling. yuk.

what was your first car?

Whatever SUV you get, make sure it has AWD. An SUV without AWD is like popcorn without butter. Sure, it's popcorn; but is it REALLY popcorn without the butter?

No.

Toyota Camry. It's mid sized and sportier then you would expect.

Ford Fusion, with the I-4 and 5MT is the sportiest car in its class.

If you want something that is peppy and overall pretty safe to drive I recommend a Honda Civic/Accord or a Nissan Sentra/Altima. While they aren't tanks, they will keep you safe from an accident even if you get hit by an SUV/Truck.

If you want a safety argument in trying to persuade your mom into letting you get a car instead of an SUV, use the inertia argument.

Come with me on this one here; imagine an SUV was a cannonball (heavy, clumsy, big), and a car was a beach ball (light, agile, smaller).

Both of these balls are moving in the same direction at the same speed.

Imagine there was an obstacle that suddenly popped up infront of these balls (like a car suddenly slamming on the breaks, an animal, an accident, etc. etc. whatever); now, the beach ball would have no problem getting out of the way as it can move its mass around very easily and quickly; moving it would require less time, effort, and power. Meanwhile, the cannonball would require a lot of time, power, and effort to move it's direction. So in this case, the beach ball can evade the accident altogether while the cannonball could not.

Also, imagine both the balls are rolling again and you suddenly need to STOP (not change directions, just stop). Stopping a beach ball from rolling is very easy and quick while stopping a cannonball is very hard and takes more time.

Use those two safety arguments and you should have some leverage.

Am I saying all cars are safer than SUVs? God no. It all depends on the situation and some cars are clumsier than some SUVs; the variables are numerous; but mass is mass. If something weighs more and is bigger, it'll naturally be harder to stop/change directions/move than something that is lighter.

Just in case you need to convince your mom.
