Looking back at the sheer amount of words I wrote, that statement is not unfair.

I think the main issue is that I am a driving enthusiast much more so than a car enthusiast. I drive different vehicles in much the same way overall.

I work on the premise that, on the public road, it doesn't matter what you drive, it's how you drive it. The limiting factor of pace in road driving, I've found, is never the car's raw performance envelope, but rather human limitations.

Even off of the road, the best racing coach in the world works with a stock Opel Astra and would beat every super-car owner to the finish-line. Hell, I was first shown how to drift in a transit van.

Not a direct answer to your question but I must say I'm fascinated by some people's budget for first car.
In comparison mine was a Skoda Felicia -99 that was like ~400 USD!
Anyways, a nice Bimmer might do you good? Say a 3-series, if you don't have kids and stuff?
In my part of the world BMW and Benz are the only (big) makes that still comes with RWD as standard.
