Default Minimum amount to pay for a reasonably reliable used car

I'm having a disagreement with someone on how much is the minimum amount you have to spend to acquire a used car to get something that is not going to constantly require repairs.

The owner would not and can do repairs or maintenance themselves but does have a trustworthy and good mechanic who services their current vehicle and to whom any prospective vehicle would be taken to be evaluated before purchase.

The context is the individual will need to borrow money to get a vehicle and we are at odds over how much needs to be spent not to end up with someone else's problem or a money pit. The individual has only a few thousand dollars in savings and very little flexible income for any type of loan.

The individual prefers small economy type vehicles.
It can be a private sale or dealer.

The area is Long Island.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

what is your question? how much he needs for a reliable car? you can get lucky and get one that is reliable for 1000, or you can get a low mileage car for 15k only to find out head gasket blown, i've seen that happen too.
look for owners selling, and bring every car to a mechanic you trust to have a look at them.
also look for cars that have best reliability ratings, and repairs are not expensive, such as toyota and honda,

I do not think there is an amount that ever assures fewer repairs. The best that can ever be determined by price is if you got a good deal or not. Some very expensive cars a very unreliable. Research and inspections help the most in reliability.
