Hello everyone. I just got a new car for X-mas, and I want to be sure I keep it in top condition so it lasts me awhile. It's a Monte Carlo 2003 SS. Top of the line model, 36k miles on it. It's supposedly a very good car, everyone I mention it to tells me it's a hot car, and it's a good buy.

I'm not big into cars, but I'd like to know what the general consensus is for this car. How does it measure up in terms of lifespan, efficiency, and just general use? I don't race, I don't go on long trips, I mainly drive "city" but I take parkways as much as I can.

I figure, any car that's taken care of (oil changed, serviced when it needs it, gas tank always above half [not sure if there's truth to this, but I was told letting it get too low on gas screws with the fuel injection system, so I always keep it half full or above], and other general maintenance) can last to 150k miles or more. I also have a '98 Honda Accord EX and it's got 136k miles on it, still going strong. Will this car last as long? 'cause I know Hondas have a reputation for lasting awhile. Is that true of any car, really?

Umm, that's pretty much it for my introduction. I'll have more questions to come, as I'm hoping to learn what I need to do to take care of my new vehicle.

And Merry Belated X-mas, all!

Welcome to the forums man! Lucky you to get a nice new car!

Change the oil every 8-15,000 miles, depending on how your driving style is. If you drive with a heavier foot, and speed a little more than you should, then change it about 8-9,000 miles. If you drive like grandma, then change it about 14-16,000 miles. Along with a nice new oil filter (by nice i mean purilator, fram, or K&N). Also, only use Mobile 1 Full synthetic, or if you cant find any around you, Royale Purple. Those are the 2 best Synthetics on the market.

Change the oil as stated above, and change the air filter with a K&N filter and youll have a well running machine. The good thing about K&N air filters is that they last a lifetime.... Ya they cost 4 times as much, but if you think about it, you save a lot of money in the long run on air filters... All you need is the cleaning kit for the K&N filters, it only costs about $20. Not to mention they have higher flow rates than all other filters... so you get more power too

If you maintain the oil and air filter, engine life will last for 180,000mi+

Also just keep any grease fittings under the car filled about every 6-8 months.

Good luck with the new ride!

Wow, every 8-15k? What happened to the old rule for every 3k in city, stop-and-go traffic? I have to see the owner's manual, 'cause I know they usually give you a maintenance schedule. Is the Monte just a good car, that the engine only needs to be changed that often? Or do you recommend that frequency of oil changes for any car?

Full synthetic is best? I thought I read somewhere that full synthetic wasn't as good, but I'm not really sure. What are the pros & cons of full synth?

Purilator, fram, or K&N - are those companies who make oil filters?

You suggest I replace the filter my car has in it currently with a K&N filter? They last a lifetime? How can that be? Don't all things wear with time? Heck, I don't even know what an air filter does, or how they work.

Grease fittings? What are those?

What other kinds of maintenance should I get and at what rates? Brakes annually or bi-annually? Windshield wipers twice a year?

Sorry for all the questions, answer what you feel like, I just want to learn, but I don't want to be a pain.

Ok.... I reccomend the oil change every 8-15k miles, only if your using Mobil1 synthetic oil. And i listed in my previous thread how to determine how often to change it depending on how you drive the vehicle. I reccomend this schedule to almost any car, not including high performance vehicles or diesel powered vehicles.

Full synthetic is THE best oil available. Why? Its man made to withstand much more heat than conventional organic oil. Heat is the enemy to anything... Heat causes stuff, such as oil, to break down faster, and thus loose many of its important qualities we need to keep an engine running "sound". Also synthetic oil has much better lubrication, cleansing, and anti-foaming properties than conventional organic oil. So all in all, synthetic is better in every way, shape and form than organic oil.

Purilator, Fram, And K&N are the best manufacturers of oil and air filters. I personally like K&N best for air filters, because they are the best... And oil filter is up to you, you will be changing it when you change the oil, so you dont really need to go all out on one. Purilators are cheaper and work great.

I suggested you change the air filter in your car now, simply because the K&N filters give much better air flow than a typical cheapo filter. Also they last a lifetime because they are not made of paper, like most other filters, and all you have to do is buy a cleaning kit for it to keep it lasting a lifetime. The cleaning kit comes with a light solvent cleaner, that you use with water to scrub and rinse the filter when needed, then a can of spray on oil, that you then spray after you clean and dry the filter. The oil help trap dust and debris in the filter. Also the K&N since it has higher flow rates, it will allow the engine to breath better, giving you more power. ~2-10hp.

Grease fitting are these little knob looking things if you will, typically found on the suspension components. You need a greese gun to fill them that you can get at any auto parts store for like $10. They esentially have a rubber bag that fills with grease around vital components to keep them lubed at all times... and about 8-12 months need a few squirts of grease to refill them.

I say change breaks as needed, when you hear them screeching from the pads being worn, then change them with some decent quality pads. Dont buy the cheap ones thinking your saving money... You get what you pay for.... The cheap ones wear out long before the more expensive ones will, actually costing you more because you will just be changing pads more frequently.

Windshield wiper i change when they start to not work very well. I just buy the replacement blades, and not the whole assembly... saves you a few dollars each time. And again... you get what you pay for.

What should I get - 5w30, 10w30, or 15w50? Don't you use different grades for different times of the year due to changes in temperature? I live in NY, so it's freezing now in December. What would I use now? What about in the Summer?

Also, how many quarts of oil do I need to buy to fill my engine? And how do I know how many my engine holds?
