Default I am now in posession of a 3D printer...

As the title states, I now have a 3D printer. There really is no limit to what can be made by someone with an engineering/technical background, simple CAD software, and a 3D printer.

Some parts I've made

First part, a Ducati Corse keychain. God this printer is sweet.

At my GF's request, batman and Tardis cookie cutters. PLA is corn starch based and is food safe.

Classic Ford V8 emblems for my project. Cost me all of $0.02 in material to make these three.

In sharp contrast to typical plastic, parts made with the printer are quite strong and remind me very much of carbon fiber. Tough but brittle.

And auto parts can be rapid prototyped from a CAD design, tweaked and adjusted once in hand, finalized and reprinted, then used as a negative for sand casting aluminum parts. The plastic part then becomes a middle step to making a final, highly precise aluminum cast part.

That's pretty cool. I was looking at getting one of the larger ones last month when the prices dropped, but figured I needed more research First. Specially on the soft wear and metals.

I went with the
Printrbot Simple Metal Printrbot Simple Metal
and PLA filament. Cost me $600 for the printer and $30 for a big roll of filament.

The software I've been using is called Repetier and does have a bit of a learning curve to it. With this Printrbot printer I went from knowing nothing about how the process works to setting up a small scale production line in about four hours.

The software is free and can be downloaded and used by anybody. Repetier download link.

Some more parts hot off the printer

Adapter for a 120mm computer fan to 4'' dryer vent pipe, for a simple shop ventilation setup. I can see the guys on OCN doing some very cool things with 3D printers in the future.

I grabbed an SD card I had laying on my desk for scale. These emblems paint easily and should be simple enough to mount on my truck.

Filament spool holder I used to hang my headphones out of the way.

These are just simple little parts I've made since the printer arrived a few days ago. The real test is when I start producing structural parts for my builds, massively reducing project build time.

I'd like to start experimenting with carbon fiber printer filament sometime soon as well. It's expensive but it may be well worth the cost for some parts.
