Default should I pay for do-over on labor by repair shop?

I recently had an alternator replaced, which the repair shop purchased. The part failed about 2 months later, and shop charged me for the labor on putting a new alternator in. I know that the parts supplier would not accept responsibility for the labor do-over, but it seems appropriate for shop to eat the second labor cost, as it was their supplier who sold them the part. Is it inappropriate for the shop to make the customer responsible for the second labor cost? Thanks.

Well I have run a home based auto repair for the last 15 years. My suppliers virtually never reimburse me for labor. Although I only buy the best quality parts, they do sometimes fail. It is also not my fault that the part fails, but I still get that the customer should not be on the hook for the cost of replacing a defective part. Because of the quantity of parts I buy and that I've been doing business with the store for over 40 years, my supplier sometimes will help me out by giving me a better price on a future purchase.

It's one of those painful realities of doing business. It was much better many years ago when quality parts were common and not so many off-shore parts. Of course, a shop will up their per-hour rates to compensate for their loses so everyone will have to pay more.

Thanks for the response. It sounds like you do not charge a second time for labor on a part that fails in warranty. Do you know if that is standard practice with shops, or is there no standard practice in the industry?

Unfortunately their is no hard and fast policy on warranty repairs. Each shop can have their own policy. You are best checking with a repair shop before you OK the repairs, ask about the warranty policy.

The warranty on new parts can vary greatly: 6 months to a year, to a limited lifetime. I give a minimum 1 year on all parts & labor.

If the shop says you have to pay for labor, then you likely have no option to not pay.

I treat my customers as I would wish to be treated.

alternator they put in is 99,9% refurbished, not brand new unit, (thou it should not matter, as far as you concerned) shops in my area usually give 30 days on labor. same was in my shop, 30 days labor, 90 days part. auto parts store only replace defective parts, they do not cover the cost of labor.
brand new dealer parts we used to give 6 months for part warranty, but still 30 day labor.

I guess it is just one of those complicated situations where supplier is naturally only going to warranty the part, and shop does not want to be accountable for supplier's product (or labor to put it in again), so customer is the one who gets stuck. Seems like the shop should warrant labor as long as part is under warranty, but that's just me.

how much did they make you pay anyway? normally alternator is about 30 min to replace, unless it is water cooled one like in caddy,

It has been a few months, but I think it was around $160 labor.

You're at the graces of the shop. You've got no "entitlement" basically to have them do it for free - if they choose to that's just out of their generosity. So take what you can get I'd say.
