Default Alcohol related deaths rise in WI

I saw this today and wanted to post it to see what you guys think.

I really dislike drunk drivers, and have been run off the road by a few, including one driving a truck with a snow plow, and another forcing me to drive up a snow hill in my jeep to avoid a head on collision. (Thank god for 4x4 or i'd have been toast)

Law enforcement officers from across the state will join in the national "Over the Limit, Under Arrest" crackdown on drunken driving, which runs Friday and ends after Labor Day weekend.

The backdrop at Monday's news conference served to illustrate what officials described as staggering statistics: In 2008, 234 people died in alcohol-related crashes in Wisconsin. Alcohol-related fatalities account for about 40 percent of all traffic deaths statewide and 47 percent of motorcycle deaths, said Michael Panosh of the State Patrol Bureau of Transportation Safety.

The rate is much higher in Brown County, where alcohol-crash fatalities account for about 60 percent of all traffic deaths in recent years.

Each of the nine traffic fatalities so far this year in Brown County were alcohol-related.

100% of traffic deaths in brown co. were alcohol related!!

"There have been zero fatalities by sober drivers," said Capt. Randy Schultz of the Brown County Sheriff's Department.

On June 18, a drunken driver going the wrong way on U.S. 41 in Ashwaubenon hit a vehicle carrying three young people from the Fox River Valley. All four died in the head-on crash.

"The young people did nothing wrong," said Eric Dunning, chief of the Ashwaubenon Public Safety Department. "What you don't see from the crash is the pain and suffering of the families of those victims. It just sends shivers down your spine."

Such crashes are preventable, Dunning said.

People who drink alcohol should make arrangements for someone else to drive them. And motorists who see erratic drivers or impaired people getting behind the wheel are encouraged to call police, Schultz said.

Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt said arrests for drunken driving rose 200 percent in one year after Green Bay implemented "Night Heat," a crackdown targeting impaired drivers.

"People need to learn to make the right decision," Schmitt said.

Panosh said the state spent $533,000 on drunken-driving enforcement grants in Northeastern Wisconsin during the last fiscal year.

Some people may say that it was only 9 deaths, but even 1 is still too many.

I guess so...

I thought I would add that it is not uncommon around here to see somebody pull up next to you at a stop light drinking a beer openly while driving.

I see it all the time with people coming through the drive through where I work.

Where isn't it a crime?

I think that drunk driving is a problem here in the Netherlands. Many 18years old guys are driving after a party with a lot of alcohol and drugs.

A short time ago died 5 people by a crash. The driver has drunken way to much. He drive into a big 4x4 with a speed of 100 km/u (60 mp/h). The Ford Fiesta of the drunk driver, with 4 passengers on board, was totally ruined. All people in the Fiesta died. The 4x4 owner was in shock but unharmed.
So the drunk driver ruined 6 families...

After 10 pm on a friday or saturday night, between 6 and 8 cars on the road have impaired drivers behind the wheel. Think about that sometime if you are out late driving home.

If you are one of those impaired drivers, you better be doing some thinking BEFORE you go out driving, and NOT do it.

I'm a believer in hard justice for those who drink and drive. 2 years in jail and 5 years suspended license would be awesome for first time offense.

This is why I don't drink alcohol. I mean, who am I kidding? I didn't drink it before so why would I start? It doesn't even taste that nice!!! My passion is automobiles...I don't wanna put that **** in jepedy. I think alcohol driving is really a problem with non car enthusaists. I don't mind speeding because people can see when it is safe to speed. But alcohol stops people's abilities to see full stop! I don't think harsher punishments are the way to go though...just show people what life would be like without their car, like maybe confiscating it for a week or somethin.
