Default 300zx starter

Hey guys Im thinking of buying my buddies 1992 300zx fair lady twin turbo and he says it needs a new starter. He said it still starts and runs but sometimes it takes a little bit for the starter to get the engine going (possibly a couple turn overs to get it running.) Is that a starter issue or something worse? and should i just buy the car as is get the starter and put it in myself? or is it a hard job to do? lemme know thanks!

If the starter engages and spins the motor, then the starter is functioning just fine. So if he has to keep turning the motor over a bunch before it fires up, there is a bigger issue somewhere else.

Has he done any mods to the car? Has he raced it on the street or track much? Beaten on it? If so i think i wold stay away unless your looking for a project car and have plenty of money to invest.

1: If the cranking speed is normal it probably isn't the starter. Likely a case of "Spark plug changes? Those don't need changing, come on now" on the part of the car's current owner.

2: If the engine cranks slowly, yet the battery is NOT the problem: Very well could be a starter. Could also be as simple as a corroded battery terminal or a fraying starter cable. If those aren't it rule the battery out, it's easier to get to than the starter.

Idunno, a weak starter will struggle but still turn the engine over. I've had a couple go out on various things over the years, they always manifest by struggling to turn the engine over at first. Usually hot starts. They'll act like the battery's nearly dead when it's fully charged, then the engine finally lights off and away ye go.

Would. Need a video of it doing it. Sounds like a crank sensor.

Dont think that year had a cam sensor. Distributor could be a culprit also.

Regardless of what it is, those are pretty much the hardest cars to work on you can fathom. If you don't know what you're getting into, stay away. I know someone who runs a 300ZX shop, only works on 300ZXs. You have to know them or have the money to pay someone who does.

nah the 3.0 is a simple set up motor not bad to work with just alot of unnecessary stuff like most older Nissans.
