Unhappy Issue With Automatic Locks

Hi everyone, just as a preface I want to let everyone know this is my first time on this forum, so please forgive me if I make some sort of mistake.

I am here becauce of an ongoing issue I am having with my Automatic (electric) Locks on my Ford Focus 2002 SE. This is actually one of MANY problems I am currently having with the vehicle, but I will limit this post to specifically the automatic locks (warning, this will be long though). Could anyone read the timeline of what happened, and possibly if anyone has had similar experiences please help me out in some possible ways to fix or mend this problem. I am trying to avoid an expensive trip to my "deal"-ership.

Here is what has happened so far in chronological order:
-I originally noticied that when I would press the lock button, there was two seperate lock "cycles" (basically the doors would all lock, unlock, then lock again)
-After letting this go unfixed for awhile, I noticed that sometimes when the doors would lock twice, the passenger side door wouldnt do the 2nd lock cycle, and so it would remain open. This started to annoy me very quickly, because I would constantly be checking if the passenger door was actually locked or not. To aid this problem I would just hit the lock button again and it would work.
-Next, when the lock button was pressed on passenger side door, it was basically "game over", sometimes it would work, sometimes only one door would lock, sometimes other things. It was basically like a random lock event would happen when the passenger side door lock button was pressed (lol)
-After this, about 3 months went by with me not using the passenger side lock at all. Whenever the passenger side lock was pressed, it would totally render the lock buttons useless (passenger and driver side no response from buttons) until I would do what I call the "reset". This is when I press in the passenger and driver side unlock buttons at the same time and hold for about 10 seconds, all of a sudden they are fixed again.
-After dealing with this for along time, I noticed that sometimes when I pressed the lock button (even twice) the passenger side wouldnt lock at all.
-I then figured out if I press lock, unlock, lock (in that order) it would always work (once again, only on drivers side).
-About a year passed with this working, all of a sudden one day it just plain ol' stopped working, let me elaborate. Sometimes, it worked normal, sometimes, it would just not work, the buttons would do nothing to lock or unlock, the old "lock unlock lock" trick didnt work.
-Basically what would happen is, it would work for a few days, then break, I would do my "reset" method (see above), and it would work again. When the locks were in broken stance, all I would hear is a very slight and quiet click in the passenger side door when buttons were pressed. The only actual way to fix this would be the reset.
-Needless to say, the reset stopped working now too (sometimes lol). So basically right now I am just manually pushing all the locks shut when I get out of the car (unless reset manages to work).
-So I was pretty angry at that point but I dealt with it, so I have manual locks. Oh well. That is until tonight, I manually locked the passenger side door, tested if it was locked, it opened normally (eventhough it shows as being locked). Actually it is almost like it is "stuck" and very hard to press in to lock manually now. Essentially the problem is my passenger side door no longer locks at all, no matter what I do, unless "reset" magically works in the morning

I am sorry for the really long post, if someone could help me out I would really appreciate it. I am really approaching my wits end with this car. As I hear - "Fix Or Repair Daily".

Thanks everyone.

Your passenger side door will require a new actuator and may need some cleaning possible lube to the movable componets in side the door itself. The 2 cycle thing sounds like the BCM ( Body Control Module) is running a out of date flash and will require a update. This can be verified by using a scanner and looking up the corrent program number on the bcm then checking it against Ford's website or just bring it in to your local dealer. Being a 02 some of the other doors may need new actuator's to and may be some maint.

It sounds like things are binding. Before you start replacing things you should try lubing the moving parts and see where that gets you. If you can actuate everything by hand easily but it still doesn't work on it's own then try replacing the actuators like lautinjr said.

At this piont the actuator should be replaced as maint. the old one will be arn out enough after 8 years working and the added strain of binding will cause it to get really weak if you don't do it now you'll just end up back in there again.

hey guys, thanks for all of the help.

I am aware of how to take the door panel off, but I dont really know what you mean by an actuator (sorry). Could you explain to me what this part actually is/does. At this point it would be great if I could just replace a part in the door so that I could still be able to use it "manual" style. Right now I have to lock manually, except the passenger side door pretty much refuses to lock. I can use my "reset" method, but even that just makes a slight click of the auto locks.

Thanks again

The actuator is the motor that actually moves the lock from open to closed this wil not be your total problem cleaning and lubing is probably required the the mechanism it self have fun good luck but i'm not sure it will work.
