This is really going to depend upon what all you are looking for, how many spectators, alternate events (such as autocross events that sometimes people run in bigger areas of the parking lots on open drag days), whether or not you want to have sanctioned events at some time (NHRA etc have specific safety requirements for their tracks).

You looking to build one or is this just a general knowledge question?

about 1 square mile is all you need for the drag strip.... But thats not the concern. Noise pollution is. In fact the 1/8th mile strip just a few minuits from me just closed down this winter due to complaintsof the noise... You have to build any track far away from where people will hear it and complain... and good luck finding a spot like that now days....

And if your looking to build something, like Techno said, maybe anothersmall track or two would be a smart investment. The nicer the track you have, the bigger the racers will come, which means more sponsors which means more money.

A small Autocross track, and possibly a cart track would be smart.

I worked as an intern at Beaver run raceway in Pennsylvania for a few weeks doing track maintenance... alot of work is involved. The built the track in an old strip mine so there were massive hills surrounding the complex to help reduce noise. http://www.beaverun.com/
