Default And here she is =)

4-cylinder 2.0L German Ford Pinto

Bit o' rust

Needs a new dash, wheel will be replace, most likely with a quick-connect.

Everything still turns, new coils and shocks need though. Rotors may be salvagable. Need new calipers probably.

Holes in the tuned header, I can fab that up easily though. Put a clear coat of high temp ceramic sealer on it so that doesn't happen again.

No bugs in the engine but the carburetors will need tending to...

Fuel bladder/cell, will be replaced by an aluminum fuel cell fabbed by me... Glad we have that CnC plasma torch...

Default More Pictures

Tires and the seat, will either be getting a new seat or padding down that one. Big tires, gonna be expensive...

The linkage on this thing is actually half-way decent for being in the weather so long.

Gearbox...

Radiators...

Skid plate isn't too bad, I can beat out that big dent there at the top of the picture, easy work.

Gonna need to cut that whole back wall and part of the floor out and weld in some new metal there.

More pics of the motor...

The carbs are in bad shape and we will need a new cam. The frame is in excellent condition though and the aluminum body can be worked on. If not I can take measurements and cut out completely new alumnium parts for the body. We have a CnC plasma at our disposal. The frame is just simple rectangular tubing but so far it looks pristine. The shocks may be able to be rebuilt and some of the linkage needs tending to. The rest of it is in good shape. The rims need a quick sand blasting and a shot of clearcoat or maybe powdercoat. The gearbox needs to be broken down and most likely replaced. One of the rear wheels spins while the other doesn't.

A cam can be custom ground from any major supplier same with the rear gear, the seat padding can be done at a upholster, and the rest would be cheap and easy to fab. I would still replace with a more modern engine. I seriously doubt that 2.0L was putting out any where near 250hp may be 120hp the German ford pinto motor weren't known for hp numbers compared to UK cars that were peppy but by American standards not as much. specially being only a single cam motor. It doesn't appear to have the structural strength or appropriate cooling for 250hp.

As light as she is 100hp would be extremly fast.

I would love to find something like this but I would be doing some reenforcement and going to http://www.mantapart.com/ for a 2.3L quad track race motor they sell the 4 single carbs and manifolds to keep a similar set up plus na could easily make 320hp

Yeah I think you are right, the more I work on it. Those HP numbers were given to me by my dad and those numbers were given to him by someone else. He only got to drive the car once. I think it will be around 125-150 realistically. I worked on it a few hours today, took the headers off, carbs are off, rear shocks as well as the hubs and linkage, the calipers and rotors are coming off then the rear of the frame (the rear of it detaches from the rest so you can pull the motor straight out with it still attached to the gear box). After I get the gearbox and motor out I will remove the gearbox from the motor then tear down the motor. I got someone who is going to work on the motor and carbs and I am going to contact the people who made the gearbox to see where the best place to start on that is.

A V-Tec would be a nice swap, lot's of RPM & HP to boot.

I remember back in the 70's that those 2.0 Ford engines would really hold together with HP numbers over 200. Don't know if that engine makes that much but I'd guess around 170 at least.

Contemplating... We will see how much it will cost to get the motor in it running. It's pretty rusty on the inside being out in the weather for 10+ years and all. The carbs were plugged but the headers weren't.

Maybe I will order one from Japan/China. I forget which one it is but they have a law that states at 30k miles you have to get a brand new engine put in your car or buy a new car. You can order the engines for cheap from overseas with 30k miles on them.

To tell ya the truth though, I would really like to keep it original... I wouldn't consider this a very valuable car but it is part of racing history (not this one in particular but Lola's in general), and also it's not a very common car either (rarity)

Wait, what? I've never heard of such a law...mandatory replacement when it's just getting broken in?

Also, perhaps a mild 289 V8 would be interesting? Would be kinda heavy tho...but one can be built that will almost peg the tach in that car, and have someone at home when doing so. Engine's in a good spot to maintain balance despite doubling in weight, so I don't think it would affect handling too much.

My rigs:

1985 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci OHV inline six | 4-speed OD manual | 310K | No power brakes | Running 100% - It hasn't driven this good in 15 years!

1984 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci six | granny four | 3.55 rear end | 210K | Brakes shot. Rear drums are doing most of the work. Not fit to drive due to that.
1997 Ford Explorer XLT | 4.0L Vulcan V6 | 5-speed automatic | shift-on-the-fly 4WD | 210,000 miles | Running 95% - Needs brakes on all four corners + bald tires
1989 Ford F150 | 300cid six...again | 5-speed | 4x4 | 160K | Needs brakes done as well. Oi!

Yes, the JDM market. Mandatory engine replacement at 100,00 KMs, or 60,000 miles.

The engines are not always the same as US & Canada, many people get caught on that after they buy a engine for $400 and then find it won't fit.
