That year they all got the 2.5 though it is slightly differently specced than the 944 2.5. Also I wouldn't say the car is fast but it will be quick.

I would say go and test drive an automatic WRX. They are fast, lots of fun to drive, reliable, and also quite practical especially if you get the wagon though it is quite homely.
