Default Reliable car under $3,000

My friend is looking for a car that is reliable and doesn't have a lot to spend, I suggested a chevy cavalier, what would you guys suggest for her?

Cavalier? Ew. I always say just get a beater Honda or Toyota. Hard to go wrong.

Or a saturn! My wife liked the looks if our 98. She said it was "Cute." (Which is probably the reason I like the older body styles lol, not so "cute.") I'd recommend a later model s series. Probably around 99-01. They all get good gas mileage. If she is looking for something sportier go with an sc2. If she's going to have passenger she should probably go with an sl or an sl2. Also some of the coupes (sc or sc2) have a third door behind the driver door which I really like.
