The tires on my old wagon dry rotted and cracked out they were BFgoodrich and about 7 years old when they went(car sat outside, not in a carport or anything). I put about 8,000 miles a year on the car, they were 60,000 miles tires and the fronts were just about worn out. About 6 months after I replaced the fronts(put the rears on the front, new on the back), they started one by one cracking where the sidewall met the tread and failed.

I guess if you drive 18,000-25,000 miles a year, its sort of a non-issue. The reasons why I don't rotate:

I don't want to do it
I don't want to pay someone else to do it
I don't want to buy 4 tires at a single time(and I never have the money)

The word on new tires on the back, came from when I was in college.

It's a non-issue anyway.

lol. Bit of laziness there. I'm guilty of it too, I need to perhaps more than you do due to my front end wear, but I just can't be assed to go out there and jack it up to do it.

can't say I blame ya there, no telling whether the guy doing it knows what he's doing or can't tell a torque wrench from an ignition wrench.

You must be even more broke than I am, then, because I only ever buy them in sets of 4. When my steers are worn severely enough to warrant replacement the rears aren't going to be too far behind, might as well change all four at once. If I can afford it then either you're just barely scraping by or you're putting Z-rated directionals on your cars. I can't tell which. Or maybe they charge 350% more for tires in Missouri compared to Nashville?

It's safety nonsense. Supposedly, new meats on the back means a loss of control results in understeer, thus giving you a crumple zone between you and whatever you hit, whereas losing the back end more often than not means door --> pole. Makes sense given how stupid most of America's drivers are and how laughably bad they seem to be at correcting oversteer.

1984 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci six | granny four | 3.55 rear end | 210K | Has had antique tags for six months :P, is running fine
1997 Ford Explorer XLT | 4.0L Vulcan V6 | 5-speed automatic | shift-on-the-fly 4WD | 210,000 miles | Running 100%
1989 Ford F150 | 300cid six...again | 5-speed | 4x4 | 160K | Literally just drove it home yesterday. Might need a clutch soon.

Let me answer your laziness and broke questions with 4 kids and a wife who has had massive medical problems for the last 16 months(mean she isn't working at all). So yeah, times have been rough.

I hear ya on the kids bit. My wife is due to pop out our second anytime now.

I get my tire pressures checked every 2 weeks. Doesn't help much, seeing as the front end is shot. I can't wait to have my car driving straight.

Thanks guys for all you advice. My Mazda now sports all new tires and I will be monitoring my tire wear a lot more closely in the future. I set up an alert system in my Computer's Calendar system to remind me to check tire wear and rotate as required. Thanks again. You may consider this thread closed.
