Default 1992 Volvo 940 Turbo (944T) Upgrade thread

I've decided that my Volvo (bought for $100) would be a good investment, so I'm going to upgrade instead of buying a new car. Although, I do have 160,000 miles on it. This is definitely a long range project, as I am not as rich as most car enthusiasts.

Right now, let's start with the basics. Here are the stock pictures:

As purchased:

After cleanup:

Some speaker work from April 2007 (images explain):

Some air cleaner work with a K&N air filter and a holesaw:

Muffler work thus far (see youtube videos here:

Cleaning the new (old) Garrett T3:

Old (new, dead, Mitsubishi TD04) Turbo:

New (old) Turbo installed and

This project relies on you guys learning me on how to be a mechanic. This car was very cheap, so I will learn on it.

Questions I have asked
1. Where can I get a decent turbo upgrade without going bankrupt?
2. http://carforum.net/showpost.php?p=20292&postcount=3

It is not easy... the tolerances are very very precise because the turbo can spin hundreds of thousands times a minute, even the slightest of a miscalculation can destroy the bearings and burn it up.

Well for right now, I have purchased a 1989 Garret T3 from a 740 Turbo for $150. I had to replace the exhaust manifold topper, though. Can't remember if it's EGR or not, but there is no tube coming out of the back of the manifold. A little less boost on the low end, but more power on top. I'll be showing pics as soon as I am able. I hope to hit 120+ with this. My turbo hits 110 right now, due to the damage.... We can't have that now, can we?

also, how should I clean the turbo, without taking it apart?
Would anyone buy my bad turbo and rebuild it?

Also, it looks like Thursday I will be cleaning the turbo, and Saturday I will be installing it.

What do you mean hit 120? 120 what? Mph? Whp?

To clean your turbo, just use some good engine degreaser, i like ZEP purple degreeaser found at home depot. And then if you really want the aluminum compressor housing to shine, use a light solution of phosphoric acid to etch the aluminum clean. The easiest and safest way to get the acid is from rust converter solutions. They use phosphoric acid to convert rust (iron oxide) to iron phosphate, which doesnt allow rust to form, and allows paint to adhear better. This too can be found at home depot.

120 MPH, sorry. I was topping out at 110. The stock 740 Turbo is rated at 162HP with the Mitsubishi TD04 turbo, and 160HP with the Garrett T3 series.
I bought some engine cleaning Gel, and it's already ripping most of the hard gunk off within seconds.

Not bad of a car you got there, check Andy's auto sports online, they have turbos there.

I put the Turbo in! It sounds like a diesel. The reason for this is that my exhaust downpipe bolts are bad, so I will replace them tomorrow. I will also get some pics for you guys, and some youtube. Also, expect some unclean pics of the old(newer, but bad) turbo.

I got the exhaust leak fixed, and the new tail pipe. I hope to be able to take it out soon and do some runs with video.
